Desert Camel Rugby Club Rugby is increasing in popularity in Pakistan. Fawzi, the President of the RFF has selected the boys for the tournament from Tehsil Fort Abbass, a rural area of the Southern Punjab where there are many children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Desert Camel Rugby Club is a club based in the area and supports the villagers from rural backgrounds. Development officer Muzzamal Khan Wazeeri of the Punjab Rugby Association and a former Lahore rugby club player, introduced rugby in and around the Bawalnagar district three years ago. With his help, Rugby was also introduced into the local government school and the sport has become a favourite pastime for the boys and men of this village. The Pakistan Rugby Union and the Punjab Rugby Association under the Punjab District Rugby Development Program assist with the development of rugby and now over 200 boys and men play at U13 through to U19 and senior men's rugby.
The club players have represented Punjab South in the National championships and have done well at the U14 and U19 interschool event, winning the third Annual Punjab Coco Cola Interschool Championship. A Desert Camel tema member also took the 'man of the tournament' award for exceptional play.
Fawzi Khawaja assisted int he team selection by Rambo Lung, former coach of Hong Kong who was in Pakistan to coach the Pakistan national side last month.
Fawzi Khawaja stated "Seeing these boys show there enthusiasm for the challenge is the true essence of rugby. This is a sport where the only real requirement is a big heart."
