On June 13th, 10 pupils and 2 teaching staff from Ngecho Secondary School in Kenya will arrive in Oundle for the first of what we hope will be many reciprocal visits. Working with touraid, Oundle has laid on a large range of experiences for their week with us, much of it utilising the Schools facilities, but also focussing on areas where Oundle can learn as much from Ngecho as vice versa, and where ideas raised and skills learnt in the UK can be taken back to Kenya.

June 2010 - Ngecho School visit to Oundle
After a coach tour of London the Ngecho group spent a week with the school where they spent days in Oundle Art School, Scitech and the Patrick Centre (with a heavy focus on transferable renewable energy), and the Stahl Theatre. There was a trip to the beach mid-week, where the children enjoyed sports and the beautiful coastal scenery with touraid staff and Erick from the Kenyan RFU, who was also accompanying the trip. One of the highlights of the tour was on the Friday when the school had a sports day, which included a coaching session with touraid's visiting ambassador Serge Betsen. The children also had fun go-karting and attending evening concerts.

As part of there visit to Oundle, students and staff from Ngecho School, Rift Valley Kenya, visited Greetings, a new card and gift shop with a dedicated section focusing on fairly traded gifts from Injabulos. Chrissie Sherwood, who runs Injabulo from the neighbouring village of Ashton, explained to the Ngecho group the basics of Fairtrade, and how she helps families in South Africa and elsewhere by paying them a fair price and fair share for what they make. The pupils were very interested to see things they were familiar with from home, in particular jewellery, and it is hoped that from the meeting, with the help of the Malewa Trust, we might be able to help Chrissie source sisal baskets from around Gilgil. In fact, it became apparent during the morning that two of the pupils come from families and communities were various products are made which Injabulo might be interested in sourcing.
The pupils left happy in the knowledge that Fairtrade allows people form their communities to sell direct to consumers in the UK - and with a bag of sweets, kindly donated by the Donaldsons, the owners of Greetings.
